Abstract
The development of nursing profession is significantly influenced by the structure of the development and the progress of human civilization. This essay argues that the development of nursing professionalism in Indonesia goes hand in hand with the development of nursing education in the country. Weak protection of nurses create situation where nurses often confront many problems while they simultaneously face increasing challenges from current free market system. Shifting patterns of society, rapid development of science and technology, globalization of healtcare, and increasing pressures of demands are current four important issues that must be coped with to improve the quality of the nurse profession. Commitment from various parties are needed to respond these challenges, among others, are their professional organizations or associations, nursing education and training institutions, and the government as well.
