Abstract

As a world maritime axis and an archipelagic state, which is seen strategic from geopolitics perspective, Indonesia has set up three international sea lanes for peaceful objectives, which are recognized either by national or international laws. This essay is part of research reports on security threats to Indonesia’s sea lane completed in 2015, whose field researches have been carried out in provinces of North Sumatera, Mollucas, and Papua. Data gathering has been conducted by combining library studies and in-depth interviews with informants, namely diplomats, academicians and stakeholders in maritime sector. Data analysis has applied a qualitative method, which selected primary data and cross-checked it with secondary one, which has been obtained from direct interviews. Research findings reveal current types of security threats in Indonesia’s sea lanes, as an archipelagic and maritime state simultaneously, with high complexity, coming from the rising tensions and conflict escalation in the South China Sea, and also from global terrorism, foreign intervention, and transnational crimes.
